Finding the Perfect Sun-Screen

Summer is definitely over, so why am I recommending sunscreens now?

Because you should be wearing sunscreens every single day of the year.

Yes. Every. Day. Yes, even on days you are staying home. Yes, even in the winter times.

UV exposure is responsible for 80% of all premature aging (as well as skin cancer). Right about when I realized this, I understood that one of the most important relationships I am going to have is the one I will be developing with my sunscreen. If there is any step in my skincare routine that I am going to splurge on, is SPF!

Kate Somerville Daily Deflector™ Mineral Sunscreen | Broad Spectrum SPF 40

Affordability: mid-range.

Whitecasting: medium

Greasiness: medium

Smell: it smells like sunscreen.

Overall: 6/10

I paid $27 for it when it was half off on Sephora and I am not impressed. It is not the most sophisticated product on the market and doesn't provide a pleasant experience.

I am not in love with it, and will not buy it again.

I will say that the customer service team at KS is top notch phenomenal. I contacted them because my bottle spilled and they sent a new bottle immediately.

EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 Face Sunscreen, Broad Spectrum

Affordability: mid-range.

Whitecasting: medium

Greasiness: low

Smell: doesn't smell like anything

Overall: 4/10

I got this as a sample in my beauty box and was super excited to try it. This sunscreen has been raved about by many influencers and it has great ratings on the internet. However, it breaks down so easily. It does not hold under makeup and it leaves these weird beads on my skin that I then have to brush off.

I do not recommend it. However, given its high reputation, I am willing to try the tinted version of it.

Bliss Tinted Sunscreen | Block Star Face Sunscreen | SPF 30 | Mineral Sunscreen

Affordability: Affordable

Whitecasting: none

Greasiness: none

Smell: doesn't smell like anything

Overall: 10/10

I am in love. When I say that you need to have a great experience with your sunscreen, this is what I mean.

For $29 (or less when bought on sale), I got the most incredible sunscreen! He is mattifying my face to the point where sometimes I will skip foundation by just wearing this one. It has no white casting and it is so wonderful to use. I am genuinely excited to put it on each morning.

Downside - it only comes in 30 SPF so better for winter days or days inside. When I am outside all day I prefer a 50 SPF.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Tinted Sunscreen SPF 50

Affordability: Low-Mid Range

Whitecasting: none

Greasiness: just a little bit

Smell: doesn't smell like anything

Overall: 9/10

When I am going outside and don't want to use my bliss sunscreen, I use this one. For $30 I get a highly luxurious experience. Another one of those sunscreens that perform like a light layer of foundation. However, it doesn't mattify my face as well and I look a little wet and shiny.

Love this one and will likely use again!

The downside for me is the fact that its a little liquidy and so can get messy. Still a winner in my books.

Bondi Sands Fragrance-Free Daily Sunscreen Face Lotion SPF 50

Affordability: very affordable

Whitecasting: none

Greasiness: none

Smell: light smell that fades away

Overall: 8.5/10

The Australians take their suncare very seriously! I Love this brand for its face sunscreen and its body one. This wins over SunBum any day! All for $10 (or less when on sale)

Such a great formula that absorbs in so quickly. Great under makeup and super easy to reapply!

The only downside is the light shine it leaves me with. Which most of the time I don't mind.

Already bought my next one.

BlackGirlSunscreen SPF 30 Sunscreen - Made by Women of Color for People of Color

Affordability: Affordable

Whitecasting: disappearing when worked into the skin

Greasiness: light

Smell: light smell

Overall: 7/10

Stating the obvious here, I am a white woman using sunscreen that is strictly formulated for black people's skin.

I like the fact that it is sold everywhere and I do think it is good.

I really had to work it in to get it fully absorbed n the skin but once it's set - it looks great. Light greasiness but not noticeable. Also, the bottle is big and lasts a long time.

The big takeaway is that it wasn't necessarily an enjoyable experience so I was happy to move on to the next.

MDSolarSciences Mineral Creme SPF 50 Sunscreen

Affordability: mid-range

Whitecasting: high

Greasiness: mid

Smell: mid smell

Overall: 6.5/10

It's not a fun sunscreen, I don't look forward to using it. To make it work, I really need to work it into the skin for 10+ minutes, but when it's absorbed the finish is beautiful.

It feels thick and silky on the skin. A valved-like feeling. Reapplication is horrendous, It leaves everything white.

Thank you, next! There are many better ones out there.

***note that they changed their packaging.

Sun Bum Mineral SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen Face Lotion

Affordability: affordable

Whitecasting: mid

Greasiness: high

Smell: no smell

Overall: 4.5/10

Yikes. Couldn't finish this one any faster. I hated the valved feeling that is thick on the skin. I tries both the tinted and non-tinted and didn't like any. It might be affordable but definitely not the best on the market.

Not much else to say...

Murad Hydration Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30

Affordability: luxury

Whitecasting: none

Greasiness: light

Smell: no smell

Overall: 9/10

I'm not likely to pay $68 for sunscreen, and I didn't. I got it at 50% off.

It is everything I want in sunscreen and it is fun to use. The packaging too is super satisfying to use because of its squeeze top and the way it is showing me how much more is left.

Loved any day of using this. It works great under makeup as well. Excellent formulation!

Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF50

Affordability: luxury

Whitecasting: light

Greasiness: light

Smell: chemical smell

Overall: 8/10

$77 is insane (thank god for Ulta's 21 days of beauty). Truth is, it's good. It absorbs quickly and feels like a treatment and not just sunscreen. It also hydrates the skin very well. For $77, I expected more, but it did everything it said it would do.

Will not likely to buy it again unless on sale.

CeraVe 100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

Affordability: affordable

Whitecasting: horrific

Greasiness: high

Smell: terrible chemical smell

Overall: 0/10

This is the worst sunscreen I have ever used in my life. It is just so terrible that there's not much to say. The grease it awful, but the white cast on this product is unbelievably bad. Even after 10 minutes of rubbing it into my skin it leaves ugly strikes and reacts very bad to water.

I understand people that say they don't like to use sunscreen having had this as their product.

Cannot believe CeraVe (which is a skincare brand I love) put this on the market.

COOLA Organic Face Sunscreen SPF 30 Sunblock Lotion

**I filmed it and lost the video - sorry!

Affordability: mid-range

Whitecasting: light

Greasiness: mid

Smell: nice smell

Overall: 7/10

I didn't jump off my bad to use this sunscreen but I enjoyed the experience. It was easy to observe and it was in a good liquid consistency that rubbed in well.

Will not buy it again but not mad at it!

Glossier Invisible Shield 1 fl oz/30 ml Daily sunscreen SPF 35

**I filmed it and lost the video - this video is from the internet!

Affordability: mid-range

Whitecasting: none

Greasiness: none

Smell: nice smell

Overall: 9/10

Really great sunscreen! I loved the invisible lotion that rubbed in like nothing! The price is not great and the bottle is small but the experience is fantastic!
